In 1967, while Alex was in the Peace Corps in Iran, he met Ali, an Iranian Muslim. They expressed their love and kept their relationship secret for 10 years. In 1977, with political unrest escalating and the Iranian revolution fast approaching, Alex was forced to leave Iran and Ali. They stayed in touch through letters, phone calls, and eventually emails. In May 2012, Alex and Ali were reunited for the first time in 35 years. Alex & Ali documents their reunion, in addition to the incredible relationship in Iran in the ‘60s and ‘70s.
